What customers say

Based on genuine customer reviews

The Hippo bag and man-and-van collection service is what customers repeatedly highlight, with reviewers describing it as a convenient alternative to hiring a skip. Several mention that the flexible bag system suits flat dwellers and renovation projects alike, allowing waste to be accumulated over time before collection. The drivers receive consistent praise for being friendly, polite and efficient, with one account noting they photograph the bag before lifting and the drive afterwards.

Office staff are also described as helpful, and communication from booking through to uplift is reported as straightforward and quick, often arranged within a day or two. Reviewers mention the removal of heavy furniture such as wardrobes, garden debris, broken pots, timber, trellis and metal arches, as well as waste from a full bathroom refurbishment. A recurring point is that, while the larger bags can cost about as much as a skip, the ease of filling them at one's own pace outweighs the expense for many. Repeat use is common, with one household reporting five separate jobs and others passing the recommendation to family and friends.

AVOID. Absolutely useless. Repeated failure to turn up for collection, no communication and a list of excuses. Take your money quick enough and then fail to do what they're paid for. Appalling customer service. Book a traditional skip with another company.

I purchased a HIPPOBAG collection service expecting what appeared to be a straightforward collection of a bag of rubble from my property. Unfortunately, the experience that followed was frustrating from start to finish. The advertised collection timeframe passed without the bag being collected. I had to contact HIPPO myself to find out what was happening and was then informed that collection would proceed. Despite this, the collection did not take place and nobody contacted me to explain why. Once again, I had to chase the company for information. I was eventually told that the collection vehicle could not access my location due to concerns about road access. This was surprising given that HIPPO Bags have previously been collected successfully from the same address and large commercial vehicles regularly access the area without difficulty. The alternative solution offered was a "man and van" service at an additional cost of £150 because the bag contained rubble and stone. However, this option would have required the contents of the bag to be transferred into individual rubble sacks beforehand. Following a recent heart attack, this was simply not something I could physically do. In the end, HIPPO offered a refund, leaving me with a bag of rubble in my front garden and the task of finding and arranging an alternative waste contractor myself. What disappointed me most was the lack of communication and transparency throughout the process. The collection deadline was missed, information was only provided after repeated chasing, and an £84 wasted journey charge was only mentioned much later in the complaint process. Although that charge was ultimately waived, it added to the feeling that important information was not being communicated clearly from the outset. I appreciate that the Customer Service Manager was polite and professional in her correspondence, but unfortunately that does not change the fact that the service I paid for was never delivered. Based on this experience, I would not use HIPPO again and would be unable to recommend the company to friends, neighbours or colleagues.

Absolute joke of a company, I use at least 2/3 of their bags a month, and they constantly let me down with collection, always giving a date then changing it, then changing it, then promise me a date and then change it… then just say well we’ll pick it up next week and if you don’t like it you can have a refund.. I’ve been waiting nearly two weeks for this bag to be collected from out the front of a clients house, who is now understandably very upset and I’m bearing the brunt of it.. this will be the last time il ever use hippo, il use a more reliable local company. They sent me a message once or twice when it was being collected then that just went out the window, now you have no idea when it’s being collected or if they will even collect it. Very unprofessional service

Moved into a property that had been empty a while & had vast amounts of ‘stuff’ left by the previous owners. So much garden debris, broken pots full of old soil, weeds, dead plants. Various bits of wood, old trellis, metal garden canopies & arches that were fit for nothing. A new neighbour told me about Hippo & I have to say they were brilliant from start to finish. I bought the medium bag, could have/should have gone bigger! Then the weather turned & my best laid plans for clearing everything went out the window. However eventually the majority got sorted, the bag was packed, I contacted Hippo, they collected 2 days later. I live on a narrow road, reached by another narrow road & how the driver did it I’ve no clue, but he did. He was friendly, polite, had it loaded & gone within minutes. Hippo are so much cheaper than skips, there is a generous time frame from buying & having the bag collected. I rang them twice with questions & both times the calls were handled professionally by people who knew what they were talking about. I can’t recommend Hippo enough. Excellent concept & excellent service.

Abysmal company. Ordered a Megabag, they sent out a midi bag also - contractor filled both but only the megabag was covered for collection - extra £180 to collect the midi bag! Collection booked, bloke turned up and took photo then left without taking it ! Bag was by edge of driveway and all other conditions were met and the text says you don’t need to be at home. Use a normal skip company, the megabag was £252 then the ‘free’ bag they sent is an extra £180 so £420+ in total. Underhand and a shambles.

Poor customer service. Untrustworthy. I ordered a bag and had it collected, ordered a second bag and before even attempted collection the driver rang to inform me that he will not be collecting the second one due to access issues collecting the first. Had they informed me of this fact I would not have purchased and filled the second bag. Though they have refunded the collection they have not refunded the cost of the bag, leaving me with a large useless plastic bag. As was an error of communication on their part I would expect a refund for the bag but they refuse as it has been "used".
